The Fisheries Extension Associate will be a member of the Maine Sea Grant/University of Maine Cooperative Extension Marine Extension Team (MET). This three-year grant-funded position will coordinate a community engagement program for an Innovative Fishing Gear Library project led by the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR), which is focused on the American lobster industry. This position will work in close collaboration with DMR staff and numerous other partners, in addition to other members of the Maine Sea Grant/UMaine Cooperative Extension Marine Extension Team. The Fisheries Extension Associate will work with partners to coordinate training sessions and workshops, keep project records, produce informational materials and help develop innovative fishing gear technology demonstrations. This individual will also lead efforts to organize and host workshops to facilitate technology transfer and knowledge sharing among project partners, the fishing industry, and community members impacted by this work. The primary worksite for this position will be within the mid-coast or Downeast Maine regions. Typical hiring range for this soft-money funded position is $55,000 to $60,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • At least three years of relevant professional experience in collaborating with commercial fishing industry, research, and/or coastal management audiences or partners.
  • Demonstrated capacity for team collaboration, problem-solving, flexibility and co-development of project plans.
  • Experience with databases, data management, and record keeping.
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience keeping timely and organized records for the use of multiple project partners and regular project reporting.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to give informal presentations to groups.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive around the state and meet people in person indoors and out.
Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree in a marine science or related field.
  • Experience working on boats and/or on the docks and on the working waterfront.
  • Experience developing and conducting training workshops for industry audiences.
  • Experience with community engagement related to technology transfer efforts for the fishing industry.
  • Basic training/experience in alternative lobster gear technology, fisheries gear and technology and other related experience.
  • Proposal and grant writing experience.
